It gives you a chance to catalog and sort the contents into things that need to be thrown away, donated or things that you are going to keep.

  • Create a donate/sell pile for all the things that you don’t want but are still in good condition. You could make a yard sale and sell your item or take them to your local donating center.

  •  Create a throwaway pile for all the stuff that you accumulated and forgot that it was even in your storage space.

Repair, clean and pest-proof your storage space

After taking everything out, it’s time to clean! You can:

  •   Clean the windows, if any

  •   Clean the floors

  •   Remove any dust or dirt from floor to ceiling and everywhere in between

Once you've cleaned up your garage or shed, carefully inspect areas where rodents, insects, or other pests may have the opportunity to get in. Repair any issues you found earlier and use caulk to seal cracks and crevices.

After a thorough cleaning, give your garage or shed a chance to air out while you move on to the next items.

Organizing everything back into your storage space

Now that your storage space is clean and you know what you are going to keep create groups of similar items (i.e. gardening tools, Christmas decorations, sports equipment, auto care, etc.), then designate specific areas of your garage or shed for each group.

Installing storage units can make it easier to find what you are looking for and you can have more room to move around your shed/garage. Some items that you can use to better organize your space are:
